Department Overview

Brighton Students’ Union provides representation, support and services to the 19,000 students studying at the University of Brighton, with a mission of Making Student Life Better. The communications team ensure effective and timely information is sent to and from the students across physical and online channels.

Role

Provide support across all sections of the Union by delivering high quality communications and marketing across all physical sites and online channels in order to increase student awareness and engagement of Brighton Students’ Union. Responsible for maintaining and updating our social media channels which includes content creation across platforms, responding to student queries and ensuring consistency. 

Communications

  • Develop an annual Social Media and Newsletter Strategy with the support of the Communications Manager, which is in-line with the team’s Operational Plan.
  • Oversee all BSU Social Media channels, keeping up-to-date with current trends and platforms to ensure BSU remain ahead of the curve, using relevant scheduling platforms.
  • Record and monitor key communications stats – producing a monthly analytics infographic to share with the wider BSU team or as requested by your manager.
  • Create, write, and post timely and effective updates to all BSU channels, using relevant and engaging content to maintain the maximum reach to potential and current students.
  • Respond to all queries via social media channels and other digital platforms, including mailboxes, in a timely manner.
  • Produce and implement creative and engaging campaigns and content across a range of different platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with the BSU branding policy.
  • Create regular e-newsletters and support the wider BSU team to create newsletters.
  • Establish and maintain good partnerships with relevant Students’ Union departments, University departments and external partners including alumni.
  • Support the Marketing & Communications Manager to carry out other day-to-day duties as required, eg the supervision of student staff at relevant events, assisting with producing training, guidance, policies, etc.
  • Attend BSU events to provide live and recorded communications as requested.
  • Assist and support the wider BSU team with any training or marketing needs.

General duties

  • Work in a manner which reflects the values and democratic structure of the Union as shown in the Union’s Articles and Strategic Plan.
  • Keep up-to-date with relevant legislation, policies and practices, rules and regulations relevant to the role.
  • Adhere to all Brighton Students’ Union policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the delivery of a positive image of the Union, both internally and externally by displaying high standards of professionalism, politeness, conduct and service.
  • Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be expected given the incumbent’s qualifications and experience.
  • Participate in and take ownership of their induction, personal development plan, departmental staff meetings and be responsible for undertaking duties with full regard for others within the conditions of employment detailed in the Staff Handbook.
  • Assist in key events and activities throughout the year eg open days, Freshers’ week, Elections and sustainability activities as required.

Location

This role will primarily be based at the Mouslecoomb Campus, with regular travel to other campus locations as required in the provision of the duties for the position.

Person Specification

Experience and Knowledge

Degree in relevant field, or related qualification, or extensive proven experience

Creating engaging and targeted communications for specific groups

Experience of working on multiple projects simultaneously, often with competing deadlines

Up to date knowledge on effective communications methods to students in Higher Education

Preparing analytics reports

Updating website pages and using associated software packages

Complying to a branding policy

Use of social media channels for proactive and reactive communications

Copywriting, proof reading and content writing skills

Managing and understanding physical/digital promotions and products

Skills

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

Creating and maintaining good partner relationships

Excellent organisational skills with the ability to multitask

The ability to generate positive outcomes through partnership working, including challenging the status quo or poor practice

Confident user of Microsoft Office applications and other relevant software packages
