Rate: £12.21 per hour

Role: Student Voice Leader (SVL)

Hours: Approximately 25-30 hours across the academic year. This is a flexible role designed to fit in with your studies. A full breakdown of hours is provided in the penultimate section.

Department Overview

The Advice and Representation Team at Brighton Students’ Union works to empower students to make their voices heard and to influence change across the university. The team supports student advocacy, democratic engagement, and access to quality advice services. As part of this work, we help students raise concerns, engage in constructive dialogue with staff, and ensure that feedback leads to meaningful improvements in the student experience.

Role

To act as a paid student partner within your academic school and across the University, working with staff to help act on and improve feedback. This role is focused on analysing student feedback, contributing to School level discussions, co-creating solutions and closing the loop by communicating changes.

Main Responsibilities

  • Attend one training session with Brighton Students’ Union and University staff each term.
  • Attend a school-level Student Voice Oversight Group per term to discuss trends in student feedback and propose ideas for improvement.
  • Attend a termly Education Hackathon with University Professional Services.
  • Work in partnership with staff to co-create solutions and projects in relation to student feedback.

Communication

  • Create a termly blog or video to close the feedback loop by reporting on actions taken as a result of your involvement.
  • Use this to promote Student Voice opportunities such as the NSS, Module Evaluation, Course Comment Boards and help other students understand how they can get involved.

Decision Making

  • Responsible for personal operational decisions on a daily basis.

Budget Management

  • This role has no direct budgetary responsibility
  • May be involved in providing feedback on small project funding requests or initiatives linked to student experience

Staff Management

  • This role has no staff management responsibility.

General Duties

  • Conduct yourself in a manner which adheres to the values of BSU at all times, displaying high standards of professionalism and service.
  • Adhere to all BSU policies and procedures.
  • Fully participate in your induction, personal and team development opportunities.
  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be expected given the qualifications and experience required for the role.

Location

This role is flexible, with activity taking place across all Brighton campuses. You may work remotely, attend meetings in person, or collaborate online depending on your school’s setup and the time of year.

September – Total Time Commitment: 1 hour

  • Attend a 1-hour induction session on Microsoft Teams (24th September, 4pm, Online via Microsoft Teams).

October – Total Time Commitment: 5 hours

  • Attend a 3-hour in-person training session (15th October, time and location TBC).
  • Attend a 2-hour Student Voice Oversight Group meeting (date, time and location TBC).

November – Total Time Commitment: 4 hours

  • Participate in a 3-hour Education Hackathon (date, time and location TBC).
  • Record and submit a 1-hour feedback blog or video by 1st December.

December – No activity scheduled due to assessments and holidays

January – No activity scheduled due to assessments and holidays

February – Total Time Commitment: 2 hours

  • Attend a 2-hour BSU training session (11th February, time and location TBC).

March – Total Time Commitment: 6 hours

  • Attend a 2-hour Student Voice Oversight Group meeting (date TBC).
  • Record and submit a 1-hour feedback blog or video (by 16th March).
  • Participate in a 3-hour Education Hackathon (date, time and location TBC).

May – Total Time Commitment: 8 hours
