Hours 37 per week
Salary £25,870 per annum

Department Overview
The Advice and Representation team plays a vital role in championing student voices and ensuring they receive the support they need throughout their university experience. The team provides independent academic and welfare advice, supports democratic processes, and facilitates student representation across the institution. By working closely with elected officers, Student Voice Leaders, and key stakeholders, the team ensures students are empowered to influence policies, shape their education, and access essential guidance when facing challenges. The team also works to create inclusive representation structures that represent the diverse needs of all student communities.
Role
To lead the delivery of proactive student advice and wellbeing initiatives, ensuring students receive the support they need on academic and welfare issues. The role will manage the BSU Advice email account, triage student cases, and provide key advice resources. Additionally, the role ensures the effective operation of BSU Essentials, coordinating student staff, stock, and donation drives.
Support
· Manage the BSU Advice email account, triaging cases, prioritising for the Advisor and Manager as required.
· Provide templated information responses to student emails where appropriate, and directing individual cases to the Student Advisor as required.
· Maintain accurate and timely records of casework, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.
Wellbeing
· Deliver on campus and electronic wellbeing events and campaigns, covering topics such as mental health, drugs and alcohol awareness, and financial wellbeing.
· Organise proactive initiatives to support student wellbeing, such as mindfulness sessions, stress-relief activities, or awareness weeks.
· Work with elected officers and the Advice and Representation Manager to ensure wellbeing campaigns align with student needs and feedback.
· Develop partnerships with university wellbeing services and external organisations to enhance support for students.
BSU Essentials
· Oversee the BSU Essentials operations, ensuring it is well-stocked, hygienic, evaluated and effectively supporting students in need.
· Supervise student staff to support the running of BSU Essentials, ensuring they understand food safety regulations and customer service expectations.
· Ensure all food safety measures are followed, including temperature checks, cleaning logs, and compliance with relevant regulations.
· Drive donations through initiatives such as food drives, online giving platforms (e.g. Give Today), and partnerships with alumni or local funding sources.
· Maintain accurate records of student usage, ensuring all students accessing BSU Essentials receive an email directing them to additional financial and wellbeing support.
· Develop an intervention system to regularly check in with frequent users, ensuring they are accessing the full range of financial, and welfare support available.
Communication
· Some detailed communication on related topics.
· Designing and delivering routine training on advice and wellbeing issues for Student Voice Leaders, society committee members, election candidates and other students.
Decision Making
· Responsible for personal operational decisions on a daily basis.
Budget Management
· Responsibility for small project funding for activities.
Staff Management
· No staff management responsibility but will assist the Manager with providing basic supervision of student staff within the department.
General Duties

· Fully participate in your induction, personal and team development opportunities.
· Assist in key events and activities throughout the year eg open days, Freshers’ and Elections as required, some of which might fall outside of usual working hours.
· Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be expected given the qualifications and experience required for the role.
Location
This is an onsite role, and will be based in Falmer Campus 1 day a week and Mouslecoomb Campus 4 days a week with regular travel to other campus locations as required in the provision of the duties for the role.

Knowledge
An understanding of a Students' Union and its range of services to students
Understanding of common academic and welfare issues students may face in higher education
Awareness of signposting routes for specialist support, both within and beyond the university
Good knowledge of confidentiality and GDPR principles
Awareness of the importance of inclusive and proactive approaches to wellbeing
Skills
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Proven ability to provide clear, empathetic information and guidance
Ability to understand and work within policies, procedures and regulations
Proven problem solving skills for routine issues
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage competing demands
Confident using Microsoft Office and other digital platforms
Able to deliver information in accessible formats (e.g. guides, emails, social media, or training)
